In medieval times the McKennas were lords of Truagh, and several of the sept including Niall MacKenna (born 1700), distinguished themselves in the field of literature. A Coat of Arms held by the McKenna family, originally the Sept of MacCionaoith, is a green shield with a silver fess between three gold lions' heads affrontee. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Kennauch Makyny, which was dated 1264, in the "Chartulary of the Priory of St. Andrew", during the reign of King Alexander 111 of Scotland, 1249 - 1286.
